Chesapeake Accolades & Citations

If you’re looking for a trophy to show off back home, Chesapeake is the place to be! Boasting the most Virginia saltwater gamefish citation awards in 2009, Chesapeake anglers reeled in scores of world-class speckled trout from the city's southern branch of the Elizabeth River during the winter months.

Capitalizing on the bountiful supply of trophy trout, anglers habitually land some of the largest of the species in the state from the waters of the Elizabeth. In fact, the Virginia Marine Resources Commission reports that speckled trout citation awards (5 pounds or 24" if released) led all other 2009 saltwater citations with a total of 849 (16%).

While speckled trout topping eight pounds are common in Chesapeake, it's those over ten pounds reeled in each season that earn it props as one of the top trophy speckled trout fisheries in the country. Other leading locations include Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and Florida.
