Chesapeake History

On the site of a pivotal Revolutionary War victory that ended British rule in Virginia, Chesapeake hosts an annual re-enactment of the Battle of Great Bridge (1775) each December. A new Great Bridge Battlefield and Waterways Museum celebrates the triumph all year long through historic artifacts, engaging Colonial exhibits, and an interpretive outdoor trail.

Another historic route worth exploring is the city’s new African American Heritage Trail. The self-guided driving tour is brought to life through a complementary podcast that illuminates personal experiences at six curated sites across the city.
