The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries helps put Chesapeake on the map as part of an exclusive Urban Trout Fishing Program. In an effort to make fishing more available to the public, the state department stocks Northwest River Park & Campgrounds' lake with more than 2,500 rainbow and brown trout each fall.

This extremely popular program has anglers lined up awaiting their first delivery in early November and fishing daily through April 30th each year as the lake continues to be stocked through the winter. While it requires limited gear, both a freshwater and a trout fishing license are necessary to fish in this program which is only offered at four other locations across the Commonwealth!
