It happens every year – days get shorter, vacations end, and calls of “back-to-school” echo in the distance. But here in Chesapeake, we pride ourselves on being the exception to the rule. Not only does our weather stay amazing through October, but there is no shortage of activities for the whole family to enjoy all over town. Check out why now is the perfect time to visit Chesapeake and let summer linger.
Get Out on the Water
Chesapeake’s warm climate means more time for outdoor adventures – especially out on our beautiful waterways. Swing by Northwest River Park for fishing, canoeing, paddle boats, and more. Elizabeth River Park offers amazing views and a free crabbing/fishing pier that doesn’t require a fishing license. With a large gazebo onsite and the world-famous Snack Shack slinging slushies, this waterfront park right under the beautiful South Norfolk Jordan Bridge is perfect for a late summer picnic.
Looking for something a little more unique? River Dogs Kayaking offers kayaking excursions from its fully equipped pontoon boat. Experience a ride through the Great Bridge Locks aboard the pontoon boat, then board your kayak and embark on a kayaking adventure through the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River.
Adventure Kayak Tours offers year-round customizable excursions at several incredible Chesapeake locations. From cruising the Great Dismal Swamp and Lake Drummond, to traversing Northwest River Natural Area Preserve, to night paddles under the stars – Adventure Kayak Tours prides itself on taking customers “off the beaten path” for the best experience possible.
Waterfront Dining and Food Festivals
While outdoor activities are great, for some of us outdoor eating is even better. We are heading right into blue crab and oyster season making it the ideal time to grab a table at one of Chesapeake’s restaurants offering waterside dining including Amber Lantern, Big Woody's and Lockside Bar & Grill.
Another perk of letting your summer linger in Chesapeake is that there is no shortage of food and drink-related events to look forward to later in the season, including the Great American Food Fest, our renowned Restaurant Week, and one of our most popular gatherings, the Chesapeake Virginia Wine Festival.
Live Local
Possibly the best thing about Chesapeake’s climate is that it allows for more time to experience what makes this city so unique. Hop on Chesapeake's Ale Trail and visit the local breweries. Visit farmer's markets as well as one-of-a-kind local farms with fresh produce and homemade delights that you can only find right here in Chesapeake. Or visit locally owned shops and boutiques where you will find one of a kind items.
