Set against the remarkable landscape of the Great Dismal Swamp, the six-acre site brings centuries of Chesapeake history to life through artifacts, interactive exhibits, restored historic spaces, outdoor installations, scenic grounds, and more.

From Indigenous peoples who inhabited the region more than 10,000 years ago, to hidden maroon communities established by self-emancipated formerly enslaved people, to the development of the Dismal Swamp Canal, you will discover the fascinating people and stories that shaped this extraordinary place.

Walk Through History

Follow winding pathways through the six-acre grounds to a scenic wetlands overlook, a recreated maroon lumber camp, and an outdoor installation commemorating Underground Railroad journeys through the Great Dismal Swamp.

Step Inside Cornland School

Visit the fully restored Cornland School, a one-room schoolhouse built in 1902 to educate African American students during segregation and Jim Crow. Today, it preserves the story of a community's determination to provide its children with access to education.
