Chesapeake - Your Spring Getaway Destination

It's a beautiful time of the year.

Once the winter gives way to colorful blooms, you’ll know it’s time to explore our little slice of outdoor heaven found in the heart of Coastal Virginia.

Springtime is synonymous with outdoor living. You’ll find that alfresco activities are as plentiful as the flowers blooming in Chesapeake, Virginia this time of year.

Spring Activities

Playing a round of golf is another way to enjoy the warmer weather. From professional courses to more family-friendly spots, like mini-golf courses, there’s something for every kind of skill set.

Don’t underestimate our fresh and salt waterways. Though Chesapeake is just a short car ride to Virginia Beach, our town boasts picturesque canals, lakes, and rivers -- all featuring fun, outdoor activities, including kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding.

While out on the water, try your hand at true Chesapeake fishing. Our waters boast many different types of species year-round. In the springtime, you’ll find mainly migratory breeding fish and flounder.

Spring Birds in Virginia and Outdoor Activities

If you’re fascinated by rare birds, like the Swainson’s Warbler, you’ll most definitely want to visit us during the spring bird migration between April and June for spectacular bird watching. That’s when thousands of birds either return home to Chesapeake or migrate through to more northern destinations. Sometimes, you may get lucky and spot a Great American Eagle.

You can find rare birds at many of our scenic parks and nature trails. But if birding isn’t your thing, there are a handful of other Chesapeake outdoor activities fun for the entire family, including cycling and hiking. Whether you explore our wild terrain on foot or wheels, you’ll likely come across wildlife not found anywhere else. Also check out the Spring Birding Festival being held at the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, with activities on the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail.

Savor the Season(s)

And you definitely can’t say you’ve been to Chesapeake in the springtime without taking a bite out of our seasonal fruit — strawberries. The red, juicy berry is in its prime this time of year. Plenty of local farms offer visitors a chance to participate in the local tradition of strawberry-picking, while many local restaurants serve up sweet dishes inspired by this delicious berry.

Relax

While there’s a host of brand-name hotels to choose from while visiting Chesapeake, sleeping under the stars at any one of our campgrounds is always a solid option. With hundreds of sites, our campgrounds are more than just a place to rest your head. One campground in particular features fun attractions, like pony rides, miniature golf, and canoe rentals.

If planning a trip seems overwhelming, we’ve created a special spring itinerary just for you. See you soon!
