Year-Round Fishing
When water temperatures begin to drop, speckled trout bask in Chesapeake's popular Hot Ditch, the premier location on the East Coast to land a citation-size speckled trout.
Discharged from the Dominion Power Plant, warm waters flow into the Elizabeth River's southern branch and create a heated haven for baitfish. Those unseasonably warm temperatures and plentiful food supply, in turn, draw hungry gamefish including speckled trout, some puppy drum and the occasional striped bass that stay to feed long after the mercury dips. In fact, they often are prevented from moving out due to temperature barriers at the mouth of the river.
Winter isn't the only time of year for fishing Chesapeake's waters. Generations of anglers gather each June at Northwest River Park's stocked freshwater lake during the Family Fishing Rodeo and Grandparents Fishing Day events. Drop a line from the bank or rent a boat and troll around to reel in bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish.
