American Indian Festival
Once a year in June, Chesapeake travels back in time to explore and share Native American heritage at the American Indian Festival. Presented by the Nansemond Indian Tribe and Chesapeake Parks and Recreation, the festival features American Indian storytelling, traditional dancing, drumming, demonstrations and more.
For 15 years and running, this special pow wow continues to capture the imaginations of kids, parents, grandparents and history buffs alike. The Nansemond Indian Tribe shares their traditions with great enthusiasm and expertise, never ceasing to captivate crowds with their colorful and energetic demonstrations in full regalia. Tribal drums, traditional chanting, dancing with leaps and spins - this isn't just a festival, it's an experience.
This event happens once a year and is a wonderful way to introduce and share native culture with young family members. Try some frybread or Indian tacos from food vendors, shop for authentic beaded jewelry or leather accessories at the craft booths, but most of all, witness and be inspired by the beautifully dressed Native Americans paying tribute to their sacred heritage.
Admission is free - so bring your entire tribe with you to learn, share, and experience the Native American way.
