Chesapeake's Christmas Bird Count

Come out birds, it's census time

As the colder weather approaches and food becomes scarce, birds start to make their way south. Come to Chesapeake, Va., to see these birds migrate to warmer weather each winter, and join the Audubon Society in its annual Christmas Bird Count.  You can help the Audubon track these beautiful birds as they move south through their "bird census" - and Chesapeake is the perfect location!

Chesapeake is located within the Atlantic Flyway, and is the winter home for more than 1 million birds, including swans, geese and ducks - a third of the total waterfowl population that winter on the Atlantic Coast.  Bird watchers will find more than 200 types of birds who make their home in Chesapeake, as well as waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors and songbirds on their way to warmer climates. With all these birds, Chesapeake is a perfect location to do your part during the Christmas Bird Count.

This year's Christmas Bird Count occurs between December 14th and January 5th, and is open to everyone. Whether you're a beginning bird watcher or an expert, you can help the Audubon Society with this census. For as long as you want, scan the Chesapeake skies and photograph the birds that you see. It's free, fun, and easy-and it helps the birds.
