Chesapeake, Virginia has an abundance of game and nongame fish for all you fishing fanatics. Chesapeake's unique location on the coast of Virginia provides fishermen with an abundance of fresh, salt and brackish waterways. With the various rivers, lakes, canals and swamps, we boast a large variety of fish found only in Virginia.
The Northwest River Park Lake is designated by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries as an Urban Trout Stocked body of water. With stocked lakes of rainbow and brown trout November through April, we guarantee a good catch.
The Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries requires that all fisherman ages 16 or older obtain a Virginia Fresh-Water License or a Trout License.
Chesapeake has several public boat launch areas that are free and open to the public. Great Bridge Lock Park and the Deep Creek Lock Park boat launches provide free launch sites that lead you through several interconnected waterways. Got your sights on smaller shipping vessels? The city also provides several areas suitable to launch canoes or kayaks.
Chesapeake hosts several events each year that bring family and fishing together. Grandparents Fishing Day and the Family Fishing Rodeo, with fun activities, fishing certificates, souvenirs and fishing tips, are held annually as part of Free Fishing Weekend. Visit http://www.visitchesapeake.com/ early next summer for more details on this event.
