The wait is almost over... Get a first look at the view from atop the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge during the inaugural Bridge Bash & River Run on Saturday, October 27, 2012. The full day of celebratory events welcomes friends and neighbors to explore the new bridge that links Chesapeake and Portsmouth across the Elizabeth River's Southern branch. The event is free and open to the public and held at 200 Poindexter Street in Chesapeake, just off I-464.
Enjoy a morning trek across the bridge and back as part of the weekend's 5K events produced by Mettle Events. Register online at www.SNJB.net to run or walk the route and be among the first to cross the new bridge, beginning at 10 am (registration/packet pickup begins at 8 am). Prizes are awarded for the fastest teams and top finishers in individual age categories. Top finishers also receive a complimentary E-ZPass "On the Go" transponder ($35 retail value).
The Bridge Bash opens to the public at noon on Saturday following an official Dedication Ceremony featuring local dignitaries, elected officials and project stakeholders on Friday. Complimentary narrated bus tours are offered until 6:30 pm for guests to ride across the bridge and learn more about the project's history and construction.
Family fun is the main attraction of the event, highlighting regional attractions and organizations with activities and games. Food and beverages are available for sale with proceeds benefiting the South Norfolk Ruritan Club Scholarship Fund, which benefits students of Oscar Smith High School.
Stop by the FIGG Bridge Learning Center to learn more about the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge from the engineers who designed it. Find out more about construction methodology and materials, enjoy a project video and build your own bridge.
A special attraction at the Bridge Bash is the Big Wheel Round-Up. Kids of all ages enjoy climbing into the driver's seat of construction vehicles that were used to build the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge. Other vehicles on display hail from emergency service divisions, US military, public works departments and more.
The celebration culminates in a spectacular fireworks display over the Elizabeth River at 7:30 pm, and the view from atop the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge is unmatched. Lawn chairs are welcomed, however please visit www.SNJB.net for the complete list of event guidelines.
Limited on-site parking is available at the Elizabeth River Park (103 Poindexter Street, Chesapeake) and adjacent SeaGate Terminals property. Additional off-site parking locations serviced by complimentary shuttles from Noon to 8:30 pm include Chesapeake's former Armory site (1800 Bainbridge Boulevard, Chesapeake) and Southgate Plaza Shopping Center (2425 Bainbridge Boulevard, Chesapeake). Portsmouth Parking is available on a limited basis at the base in the bridge and adjacent streets with bridge access provided by complimentary guided bus tours until 6:30 pm.
Additional weekend activities include a "Free Sunday Drive" on Sunday, October 28, 2012 from noon to 6 pm. All vehicles are welcomed to travel the new South Norfolk Jordan Bridge at no charge during this special preview period.
On Monday, October 29, 2012, the new South Norfolk Jordan Bridge officially opens to traffic at 6 am with special commemorative items distributed to the first 50 vehicles to cross the new bridge. The facility does not have a toll plaza, instead it uses all electronic tolling. Vehicles crossing the bridge should be equipped with a valid E-ZPass or have a registered South Norfolk Jordan Bridge Pay by Plate account. Unregistered vehicles that travel the bridge will be invoiced for accrued travel fees. Motorists may sign up for E-ZPass and acquire a transponder at the Chesapeake Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Customer Service Center (CSC) at 813 Greenbrier Parkway or may log on to www.EZPassVA.com to sign up or find additional service outlets.
